Huirui-laser’s Laser Cladding Technology in the Coal Machinery Industry

November 19, 2024

Advantages of Laser Cladding Technology

Currently, the main alternative to electroplating technology in China is laser reprocessing technology, which is gradually becoming the new direction for industry development. The core of this technology is to use laser cladding technology to replace electroplated hard chrome, laser hardening to replace high-frequency and medium-frequency hardening, and laser nitriding for surface treatment. This not only effectively controls the pollution problems associated with electroplating but also significantly reduces production costs. The entire repair process is unaffected by the working environment.

Laser cladding involves using a laser to apply high-performance metal materials to the surface of a part. Due to the extremely high energy of the laser beam, both the cladding material and the base material melt simultaneously. After rapid cooling, a perfect metallurgical bond layer is formed, significantly improving the part’s wear resistance, corrosion resistance, high-temperature resistance, and oxidation resistance. Compared to traditional electroplating processes, laser cladding is an eco-friendly manufacturing technology that is simpler, requires less energy, and does not generate waste water or gas, greatly reducing the cost of waste disposal. Moreover, the combination of the cladding material and the substrate is metallurgical, preventing issues like coating peeling or delamination. The cladding’s hardness, toughness, and corrosion resistance all exceed the performance of traditional electroplated coatings.

Laser Cladding vs. Electroplating Price Comparison

Research into the cost of batch processing of shaft components indicates that the cost of electroplating with a thickness of 0.10mm using traditional methods is roughly equal to the cost of ultra-high-speed laser cladding with a thickness of 0.5mm. As national and local environmental policies are further implemented, the cost of electroplating has been significantly increased, making the price of laser cladding increasingly comparable to electroplating.

Additionally, since the service life of the cladding layer is much longer than that of electroplated coatings, end users in the coal machinery industry will save on operational costs by adopting products with new technology, compared to those using traditional techniques. In other words, the future market will likely shift towards the widespread adoption of laser cladding technology to replace traditional electroplating processes.
